Blog Post: Visual Studio 2010 SP1

Earlier this month, we released Visual Studio 2010 SP1.  The service pack is available for download from here and the updated Report Viewer redistributable can be found here.

We always prioritize our efforts based on feedback we receive through Connect as well as through the forums and other channels.  If you are running into problems with the product and believe you have encountered a bug, please file the issue at Connect so that we can investigate it.  We review those issues regularly and adjust our priorities accordingly.

This service pack contains a number of important fixes to the viewer runtime and design time components.  The list below is not an exhaustive list of fixes, but it does touch on the most common and visible issues that have been reported.

  • The most widely reported issue we have addressed is the use of nested objects in object data sources.  Attempting to reference nested objects in report expressions resulted in #Error.  I wrote about this problem previously.  This issue was fixed in the CTP for this release, though some customers continued to report the problem.  After investigating these instances, we discovered an additional requirement – in addition to requiring the objects to be serializable, this update also requires them to be public in order for the serializer to handle them correctly.
  • We have improved the rendering performance of the ASP.Net report viewer when rendering large HTML pages.
  • Data sets in subfolders of the VS project are now usable at design time.
  • Fixed a Visual Studio crash when using the Dataset Properties dialog in some projects that contained an edmx schema.
  • Fixed an issue in which a WinForms report viewer embedded in a WPF application resulted in an exception unloading an AppDomain while closing the application.
  • Fixed a problem in which some icons used in the calendar date picker for parameter prompts would not display.
  • Fixed an issue in which rendering a report would change the thread culture.
  • Fixed an HTML display problem with consolidated images (such as charts and gauges).
  • Fixed a GDI display problem with the WinForms report viewer that resulted in the page being displayed zoomed even at 100%.

US/UK: Separated by a Common Financial Crisis

Want to understand how utterly corrupted the US has become by its own banks? The Convertible Bond Indicator

Wall Street Strategies submits:

By Brian Sozzi

"Although convertible bonds are called bonds, they behave like stocks, work like options, and are cloaked in obscurity." ?Benjamin Graham

Debt underwriting has been a hot place for an I-banker to reside within the confines of the biggest financial institutions around during the risk asset rally. Straight U.S. debt issuances clocked in at $1.2 trillion in 2010, about on par with 2009, though on a fewer number of issuances. Companies have sought to capitalize on the attractive interest rate environment courtesy of the Federal Reserve to re-lever, or lever for the first time, their balance sheets to undertake a combination of: (1) capex funding; (2) share repurchase program and dividend plan funding; (3) debt maturity extension; (4) the bringing in of low cost funds for a rainy day should the economy hit the skids once more.

Lately, a paradigm shift has surfaced, where those in the executive

Why Dendreon Will Power Ahead Now

Saul Kerpelman submits:

Wednesday afternoon, Dendreon Corporation (DNDN) got the "all clear" from Medicare for coverage of its breakthrough cancer treatment, Provenge. The agency's decision memo is technically a "proposed draft", subject to a 30 day comment period and possible revision before a "final determination" on or before June 30, 2011. But for all intents and purposes, the language and supporting reasoning of the memo make clear that coverage by Medicare for Provenge is going to happen.

Coverage breakthrough

For Dendreon this is huge. Shares traded into the 50's immediately after FDA approval of Provenge in April 2010. They then drifted into the 40's after the initial spike, and were knocked as low as the 24's after-hours on June 30, 2010 when Medicare announced that it was going to conduct a review of coverage. This price action was certainly understandable, since most men who suffer from the labeled indication for Provenge--late stage metastatic

New Survey Offers Glimpse of SMB Ad Outlook

Earlier this month local advertising firm Borrell Associates released its annual Outlook survey for 2011, which attempts to gauge where small and medium-sized businesses fall with investing in online advertising. This year?s study was particularly interesting, noting that SMBs actually make up for 95 percent of all local advertising online. They may not spend much on average (the average SMB spends less than $12,000 on all advertising; of that, $2,300 goes to online advertising), but their sheer numbersRead More

Looking Past the Case-Shiller and Toward Supply

With the S&P/Case-Shiller Index releas, everyone is aflutter with talk of a double-dip in house prices. Remain calm. These are January numbers. It's almost April. More recent figures exhibit more positivity for the 2011 housing market. Here's how --

Since 2008, as the active housing inventory (the number homes available for sale) rose more sharply, price gains were dampened. Makes sense, right? Price is the intersection of supply and demand. In 2011, we're past yesteryear's demand stimulus programs (i.e. tax credit), unemployment levels remain obstinate despite recent GDP growth, and homeownership rates are declining. Not much left to impact prices in the short run except supply.

Here's the good news for 2011 so far - despite inventory increases this Spring on par with 2008 and 2010, market prices are also rising. Measuring the slope of price and inventory changes in our Altos 20-City Composite over the last four Spring-time markets

Blog Post: Using Project to Create Meeting Agendas

If you think about it, meetings are a lot like projects. They?re for a defined amount of time with the goal of getting something accomplished. All good meetings have a defined agenda just like all good projects have a detailed schedule. Since you can use Project to create schedules, why not use Project to create your agendas?

Now this is probably overkill for your one hour meeting where the agenda is three bullet points but if you are trying to plan a multi-hour meeting where a variety of speakers have to present and you need to stick to a timeframe ? Project can definitely help.

I recently had to plan a meeting that had some complexity and using Project saved me time. I knew that we had four hours available and had to get in seven presentations plus an intro and conclusion. I started by just dividing the time out and giving everyone the same amount of time but then all the speakers were saying they needed extra time or didn?t need that much time. If I had been in Excel or Word I would have had to manually update all the time slots and then constantly be checking to make sure everything still fit. Since I was in Project, I could make use of links and deadlines to automate this. This was especially handy after I made what I thought was the final schedule and someone pointed out I should probably add some breaks seeing how it was a four hour meeting ? whoops.

The below timeline is the final result of my planning and made for a great agenda graphic in my meeting request:

image

How did I do this:

  1. Create a new project.
  2. Go to the Project tab ? Project Information and set the project start date to the exact date and time of the meeting. Ex. 3/23/11 1:00 PM.
    1. If your meeting goes over lunch or outside normal working hours, also make sure to set the Project Calendar to the 24 hour calendar so it doesn?t affect your agenda.
  3. Go to File tab ? Options.
    1. On the General tab, set the date format to HH:MM
    2. On the Duration tab, set Duration is entered in Minutes (or Hours is that works better for you)
  4. Now add your agenda items in the order you?ll be presenting. Feel free to use summary tasks to help organize the topics ? I did.
  5. Select the last meeting item and go to the Task Information dialog ? Advanced tab. Set the deadline to be the meeting end time. This way you?ll get an indication if you go over time.
  6. Now link all of the tasks by selecting them and clicking Link Tasks on the Task tab.
  7. You can now start playing with different durations to build a meeting agenda that will work. Don?t forget breaks!
  8. When you are done, you can create an agenda timeline by right-clicking the tasks and selecting Add to Timeline.

Here?s the actual schedule that I created:

Why the Fed's Core Inflation Method Is Not an Accurate Indicator

The Intermarket Edge submits:

The core inflation method used by the Fed is not an accurate reflection of inflation, nor an 'indicator' in any sense of the word. It is a backward looking, 'lagging' indicator. To get a grip on how the pressures of global inflation are building, one must look beyond labour costs and start considering the very real nature of rising prices in raw materials.

The CPI calculations have been changed so much over the last 30 years that most retail traders may not even know what it measures anymore.

One can only wonder why such grand differences exist. The largest component of the CPI is housing, right? The biggest change in the CPI was made in 1983. During this time, CPI methods changed and stopped using housing prices as the main component, switching instead to the subtle 'owners equivalent rent'. This new method is described as "the amount

Blog Post: Digital Zombies: Real or Fantasy

Digital zombies, I have been giving this term some thought.  What are digital zombies?  Are the timewasting apps that get us to hang time on an app with an advertisement a digital zombie?  What about someone who hooks their facebook up to 4 square or similar to broadcast where they are located?  Is it that blogger who keeps writing about random stuff and you have to spend time figuring is there a reason for the post? (Ooops ignore that last one, that could be me!) Or, is it a zombie that only wants to eat your fingers (in English that is a ?pun? or a play on words.)

The New York Times, the newspaper of record, has an article ?Beware the digital zombies?, and defines a zombie as one of the computers in a ?BotNet?.  However, that was in 2008, so maybe the term could be reconfigured to something else.

I like the use of Digital Zombie eventually as the term for Artificial Intelligence that allow people to upload their personalities (or in some cases, lack of personality) into the internet.  The Digital Zombies would be AIs that are stealing other people?s memory.  Of course there are game ideas. Could you use one of the free game engines to design the game for the Windows Phone 7, XBox or Windows, using Bing Maps?

In the interim, maybe a digital zombie is a completely useless app that wastes your time more than three separate times and take up 5 minutes of your time.

Why G.E.'s Tax Reducing Strategies Are Legit

Ira Stoll submits:

The New York Times has a long front-page news article calling for General Electric (GE) to pay more taxes. Regular readers of the coverage here of both General Electric and taxes know that I am critical of General Electric's efforts to use its political clout for special subsidies and that-- as a general matter-- I favor a tax code with simple low rates (or even a single flat rate) that treats everyone the same rather than favoring certain companies or groups or behaviors.

The Times does a pretty good job of explaining how GE achieves its low tax rate using outside lobbyists and an in-house 975-person (!) tax department that "includes former officials not just from the Treasury, but also from the I.R.S. and virtually all the tax

Oracle's Sun Purchase: Grading the Results So Far

Dividend Growth Investor submits:

Oracle?s purchase of Sun Microsystems is a little more than a year old and the results thus far look decent overall. The problem: Quantifying Oracle?s success with Sun since the acquisition closed Jan. 27, 2010 is tricky.

Why is it so tricky? Oracle (ORCL) has melded software with hardware to sell integrated systems. The company has stopped selling many Sun boxes and nixed reseller agreements. Meanwhile, Sun has lost market share in the server market, according to IDC. Some of this share loss is by design, but it?s hard to discern what share losses are actually good for Oracle. What?s good market share loss versus bad?

Even Oracle?s operating profit goal for Sun is a bit murky. For instance, Oracle trumpeted that it was ?completely confident? that it will deliver $1.5 billion in operating profit from Sun by the end of the fiscal year at the end of May.

But

These Numbers Just Don?t Add Up

Getting Right Down To It

This cartoon was originally captioned, “Yes, I can see that you added these numbers up, but they still don’t, you know. . .add up.” It’s a fine caption, but if brevity is indeed wit, that line is less than witty.

You see, in general, you only have a few seconds to get a cartoon across to a reader, so any shortcut you can take (implying background, simplifying scenery, pruning a caption) helps a lot.

But this oneRead More

Blog Post: Could Taking A Computer Science Course Change Your Life?

Well it did mine. And Mark Guzdial ha a post last week in which he told two stories of young women taking his Media Computation course at Georgia Tech and how it changed the direction of their careers. (Read Impact of CS on female non-majors: Beyond a pipeline model ) While in my case,a poor confused college student with no idea what he wanted to do with his career who took a computer science course almost by accident and discovered his life?s work not everyone falls so deeply in love with the object that they get a degree in the field. But for many people taking a computer science course, sometimes even just one, adds a dimension to their career that is both unexpected and helpful.

We talk a lot about ?Computer science and? these days where the ?and? refers to what ever else you may be more interested in doing. Accounting? Yes, computer science knowledge will help. Biology? You better believe some CS will help with all that data you can collect these days. And I could of course go on. In one of Mark?s stories his student got an interview, and ultimately a job, because hiring managers were impress that she?d acquired some CS knowledge to go with her accounting degree. I have to believe this is not rare these days.

I understand that huge numbers of professional developers do not have degrees in computer science. 40% is one number I've heard 40% and higher. I?m sure most of them have some training though. A course or two can help. In my case my undergraduate degree is not in CS but I took a lot of CS courses. I?ve seen evidence that a lot more students are doing CS minors these days. That fits in well with the ?computer science and? idea. In many cases I expect that some first computer science course with an inspiring teacher lead them to that additional and supportive minor in CS.

One of the things I hope will come from some of the new initiatives in CS education in high school and earlier is that students will get interested in the field. If they become a major, that?s great. But even if not a major that base of real computer science will serve many students well in what ever career they follow. And that is one big reason I believe we need more good HS CS courses. It means more opportunities to change a life.

With Inmet Merger Unlikely, Is a Break-Up Next for Lundin Mining?

Streetwise Blog submits:

By Boyd Erman

With the market deciding that, one way or another, the merger of Inmet Mining (IEMMF.PK) and Lundin Mining (LMC) is unlikely to proceed, the focus is on what's next for Lundin.

Lundin could try to go it alone, but analysts say that an auction of the company is a possibility, as is a sweetened bid from Equinox Minerals (EQMIF.PK), which has lobbed in an unsolicited offer for Lundin. A third possibility that bankers are said to be pitching is a breakup of Lundin to try to extract extra value

Friday Options Brief: RIG, S, EK & TDC

Andrew Wilkinson submits:

Transocean Ltd. (RIG) ? Activity in near-term put options on the provider of offshore drilling services suggests some investors expect shares in Transocean to head further South in the next few weeks. RIG?s shares are currently down 2.00% to stand at $78.67 in early-afternoon trade. The stock is down 8.5% off its 11-month high of $85.98 set on March 3, 2011. Bearish players purchased around 1,400 of the April $80 strike put options at an average premium of $3.11 each.

Put buying spread to the lower April $75 strike, the most heavily trafficked strike thus far in the session, to secure 2,800 puts for an average premium of $1.26 a pop. More than 4,000 puts changed hands at the April $70 strike on paltry previously-existing

Recreational Farmers and Ranchers Help Tractor Supply Grow

Jim Van Meerten submits:

This morning I was looking at a list of companies that have had sales and earnings growth of at least 10% annually and are expected to continue that growth rate in the future. Anytime you have a list of companies that have equal attributes its amazing that some may be over bought while others are over sold. I take lists that are similar and run them against the Barchart technical indicators to find those that have lagged in the past but are trying to catch up. Tractor Supply Co. (TSCO) was right at the top of the list. While researching this company I came across the term "recreational farmers and ranchers." These suburban clients are giving this company fantastic sales growth and the stock has very positive momentum.

Hot Air Over Monetary Policy

Erwan Mahe submits:
Wonder what qualifications are required to be a central banker these days? Some of what passes as commentary by central bankers these days is enough to drive a sane man mad! Either they truly think we are all idiots or they "truly" understand nothing about the nature of currencies today (fiat), despite having considerable responsibility for them.
However, for once, I am neither referring to the ECB and the sabre-rattling of its governors, nor to the potential candidates to Trichet's succession, who are carrying on as if they were in a race to prove who can be the most slavish to Germany's monetary obsessions and the most hawkish.
No, this time I am talking about the Fed's Mr Fisher and Mr Shirakawa and Mr Miyao of the Bank of Japan.

Sallie Mae Weighs Investor-Friendly Moves

Zacks.com submits:

We have upgraded our recommendation on SLM Corp. (SLM), better known as Sallie Mae, to Outperform from Neutral. The decision is based on Sallie Mae?s fourth quarter 2010 core earnings, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate, primarily attributable to the decrease in loan loss provisions and gains from repurchasing debt.

In January, Sallie Mae reported fourth quarter 2010 core earnings of 75 cents per share, marginally ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 72 cents. The results compare favorably with the prior-year quarter?s core earnings of 44 cents per share. During the quarter, the company repurchased $1.3 billion of debt with realized gains of $118 million.

On December 31, 2010, Sallie Mae successfully accomplished the acquisition of $26 billion in securitized federal student loan assets from The Student Loan Corporation, a Citigroup Inc. (C) subsidiary. The acquisition expands Sallie Mae?s customer base by about 1.3 million, and should support its

Research of ETFs

michael krauseMichael Krause submits:

Note: The following is Part 1 of a 4 part series entitled Research of ETFs. It walks readers through the inadequacies of existing research methods, argues the benefits of a fundamentally-driven, forward-looking analysis, and illustrates how investors and their financial advisors can put these tools to work in the real world. This unique approach is the basis behind the ETF Analyzer app on Seeking Alpha. The entire Research of ETFs guide can be downloaded here (pdf).

Introduction
Exchange Traded Funds are part of a larger, secular trend toward index investing. While many financial advisors have embraced ETFs others view them as a threat or are unsure how they can use them to add value for clients. Often, one?s view of ETFs is tied to his or her view on the merits of active versus passive investing.
Actively managed funds' central drawback
But the debate over active versus passive management largely
