3 Stocks With Rising Dividends and Impressive Dividend Trends Targeted by Institutions
If you are considering sources of dividend income, there are several important considerations to keep in mind. The company?s payout ratio (dividend per share/earnings per share) should be sustainably low, while cash flow should be healthy enough to continue paying the dividend. The dividend yield should be sustainably low as well.
We ran a screen on dividend stocks for those that have seen rising dividends per share while also seeing decreases in the payout ratio. Only dividend yields below 7% and payout ratios below 35% were included.
We also screened for increases in operating cash flow/revenue, comparing the trailing-twelve-month ratio to the three-year average. Finally, we screened for those stocks that have also been seeing significant net institutional buying over the current quarter.
Interactive Chart: Press Play to compare changes in analyst ratings over the last two years for the stocks mentioned below. Analyst ratings sourced from Zacks Investment Research.

7 Mortgage REITs That Yield Over 10%
Investors seeking higher yielding income equities often consider or hold mortgage REITs. This is a review of the dividend payouts of the seven largest high-yield mREITs that I have found to be relatively liquid. I have charted and included the dividends paid within the last eight quarters, or since the recent general bottom in the market. I have also included their present yields and 2011-to-date performance.
These seven mREITS all yield between 10% and 20% percent annually, or somewhere between 2.5x to 4.5 times the yield of a 30-year U.S. Treasury. Several of the mREITs also only hold U.S. backed mortgages (with leverage), which carry an implied agency backing. Others hold higher risk paper, with lesser to no backing and far greater yields. By hook or crook, these mREITs currently offer income at a level above many layers of junk-rated bonds.

Has the Recession Started?
That was one ugly Friday for economic reports. Among the slew of bad reports, the Reuters/Michigan Survey of Consumers declined so much that the survey director, Richard Curtin, stated: "Whenever the Expectations Index has been this low in the past, the economy has been in recession."
Has the recession started?
Many economic indicators have been trending down but they don't seem to be in recession territory yet. We can classify indicators into three categories: No recession forecast, trending toward recession, and in recession. A list of some of the more important ones is below:
No Recession Forecast
Trending Toward Recession
- Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index
- Institute of Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing Index
- ISM Non-manufacturing Index
- Composite Leading Indicators (CLI) OECD
In Recession
So what does this mean?

Blog Post: Using the wrong HINSTANCE in RegisterClass is like identity theft
Last year, I left you with a teaser for a problem that resulted in the CResourceException
being thrown.
Studying the function that threw the exception revealed that it was thrown due to a failed call to RegisterClass
. And studying the parameters that were passed to RegisterClass
revealed that HINSTANCE
parameter did not match the DLL. Instead of being the instance handle of the DLL, it was the instance handle of the host application.
Okay, now let's apply what we learned a few years ago about the significance of the HINSTANCE
parameter passed to the RegisterClass
function. By passing the HINSTANCE
of the host application, the class was registered against the namespace of the host rather than the namespace of the DLL. It's like signing up for a credit card using somebody else's name or checking a book out of the library with somebody else's library card.
In this case, the module in question was a plug-in. It tried to register a class called, say, MyClass
, and instead of registering against itself, it registered against the host application. Fortunately, the host application didn't have a class called MyClass
, so the incorrect registration didn't cause a conflict. The book got checked out to the wrong person, but as far as the library can tell, nothing has gone wrong. It merely looks like the host application checked out a book.
So why did the call to RegisterClass
fail? Because some other plug-in made the same mistake. Plug-in B also registered its class against the host application, and by an amazing coincidence, its class was also called MyClass
. (If you look at how MFC auto-generates class names, you can see that this name collision can happen quite easily.) If both plug-ins had registered their classes properly, there would have been no problem, because each class would have been registered against their respective DLLs, and no conflict would have arisen. But instead, two wrongs make a wronger, and since both plug-ins incorrectly registered their classes against the host, the first plug-in to register succeeds, and the second one crashes.
(One might argue that this is another special case of What if two programs did this?)
Both plug-ins tried to sign up for a credit card in the name of the host application. The first one got the card, and the second one was informed by the credit card company, "Your application was denied because you already have a card from us."
Why did these plug-ins register against the host application instead of against their own library cards? I don't know for sure, but my guess is that it was due to ignorance.¹ When reading the documentation, they found that they needed to fill in the hInstance
member of the WNDCLASS
structure. Gosh, where do I get an HINSTANCE
from? Oh wait, I found a function that returns an HINSTANCE
: GetModuleHandle
. And hey look, if I pass NULL
, a valid HINSTANCE
comes out. I'll just set wndclass.
and try it. Hey, look, it works!
Footnote
¹ This reminds me of a story that took place at an administrative hearing. The government agency representative presented as evidence that the other party admitted in a telephone conversation to being ignorant of the applicable regulations.
The other party angrily interrupted.
"I'm not ignorant! I simply didn't know what the rules were."
The judge patiently explained, "That's what the word ignorant means."

Blog Post: Common Workloads for Azure
When we start looking at Windows Azure there are several key workloads that come to mind, the ones that are pretty much slam dunks for being a fit.
Workload 1 - On and Off
On and Off typically represents applications or web sites that are needed for a short period of time and later shut off. An example of this would be a marketing campaign that runs a web site for two months every year around Christmas because it is your peak sales time. The cost of acquiring the capacity for this heavy load period and then maintaining throughout the year or recommissioning can often be very high. Azure allows you to minimize both the upfront capital investment and the recurring monthly maintenance expenses. The reason for this is that you pay for what you use in Azure, so if you run it for these two months then decomission it at the end you stop paying for it until the next year when you redeploy. This not only helps reduce cost but potentially offers the business the ability to execute on more campaigns than they would typically due to overall cost.
Workload 2 - Scale Fast
Scale Fast is reflective of applications or sites that are introduced by the business without a good handle on what the adoption rate will be. Typically you would have to build out extra capacity at the beginning beyond the anticipated level to ensure the best customer experience. Using Azure you can start with a couple instances of the application and write code that will automatically deploy additional instances as required based on actual usage. This allows the available capacity to closely follow the real demand for the site, keeping costs down while reducing the burden of capacity planning.
Workload 3 - Predictable Bursting
Predictable Bursting is typically seen in companies that have a seasonal component to them, such as retail with Christmas driving a large quantity of their sales or finance where RRSP season can spike in activity. Azure can be used in this scenario as well to reduce investment in additional hardware and infrastructure required to support the load during these bursts. There are two ways people typically handle this type of capacity "augmentation", either through load transference where they host the application, or some components of the application, in Azure during the burst or as an application extension. Application extensions can be an interesting scenario with the application running on premise during normal load states or periods and when additional capacity is required they introduce additional capacity in Azure, never eliminating the on premise portion. This is sometimes referred to as a hybrid application.
Workload 4 - Unpredictable Bursting
Unpredictable Bursting is the same as Predictable Bursting above except in the sense the burst can come at any time. An example of this is if the government ran a campaign that gave tax breaks on purchasing new appliances appliance retailers may all of a sudden realize a significant load increase on their web sites. This is load can be handled in the same way as the Predictable Bursting scenario, except the identification of the burst scenario would typically be automated to ensure it could react and scale on demand.
The above workloads do not make up a comprehensive list of scenarios where Azure can be leveraged, but it does identify the key four workloads where the value of Azure can be quickly recognized.

Will the Virus Claim Rupert Murdoch Himself?
The News Corp (NWS) hacking virus is proving both virulent and highly contagious. Rupert Murdoch tried to treat it with amputation, by closing down the News of the World, but the surgery came too late, and he couldn?t prevent the virus from spreading to the Sun and the Sunday Times. At that point, the virus was unstoppable: its next victim was Murdoch?s $12 billion bid to take control of BSkyB. Now, with the UK police investigation barely having started, the virus has managed to jump over the Atlantic: the FBI is getting involved, looking into allegations that Murdoch?s papers tried to hack the phones of 9/11 victims.
This isn?t the investigation under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act that Eliot Spitzer was calling for, although that might well come next. Both of them would normally seem like a bit of a stretch ? it?s far from clear that anybody at News

Another Sign of Struggles on the Job Creation Front
By Dave Altig, senior vice president and research director at the Atlanta Fed
Hot on the heels of the bleak employment report for June, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics yesterday released another important bit of labor market information: the May Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (pdf), commonly known as JOLTS. Calculated Risk accentuated the positive:
"In general job openings (yellow) has been trending up?and job openings increased slightly again in May?and are up about 7% year-over-year compared to May 2010.
"Overall turnover is increasing too, but remains low. Quits increased again and have been trending up?and quits are now up about 10% year-over-year (usually a sign of more confidence in the labor market)."
The hires and quits angle was noted at Modeled Behavior as well, but at Zero Hedge Tyler Durden isn't in the mood for even muted optimism:
"There was nothing to smile about in today's May

Take this with a grain of salt, but from a trading perspective, it is time to adopt a somewhat defensive approach as long as Europe remains unsettled. As we pointed out yesterday, you should be taking some profits and trading lightly on your positions at this point. Keep it nimble, in other words.

Merger Mania in the Brazilian Air Travel Market: A Net Positive
As long-time followers of Valuentum know, we're not too fond of airline stocks. Essentially, we view them as merely a speculative bet on the trajectory of economic growth and the direction of jet fuel prices. But while the price of black gold remains largely out of airline executives' control, it's hard not to like the economic growth prospects of the Brazilian air travel market, which has been on a tear during the past several years thanks in part to heavy discounts on fares offered by low-cost carriers such as Gol (GOL). Plus, the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, both to be held in Brazil, will serve as temporary and abrupt stimulants for air travel demand toward the middle of this decade. The "Gol Effect" as outlined below is quite remarkable ... and all of this expansion is despite the country's strained air travel infrastructure.

Staring Down China's Inflation Dragon
China?s inflation jumped to its highest in three years with its consumer price index surging 6.4% year-over-year in June. The spike has been fueled by escalating food prices despite the central bank?s effort to tame inflation by pushing up the RRR (Reserve Requirement Ratio) for commercial banks six times this year, while raising interest rates five times since September, most recently on July 6.
Inflation Hinges on Hogs
Food prices, which weight about 30% of the CPI basket, climbed 14.4% from a year earlier, and the price of pork, in particular, increased 57.1% year-on-year, and 11.4% month-on-month and is the engine behind the runaway consumer inflation train, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics and reported by China Daily.
Pork, a staple of the Chinese diet, hit a new high in June due to rising costs and short supply. One analyst based in China warned that price
